Girls Gone Wild. Ish

So I missed posting yesterday but posted thrice on Saturday, so I'm still good, right?

Random weird memory of the day: in elementary school, I found out that an older girl in the school was mad at me. My next-door neighbour informed me that Shelley told her I had "started a 'humour' that she had a big nose".

I never said anything to anyone about her nose. Her nose was fine. She was a very attractive girl. That's not how rumours work. I am annoyed that I will never know what was behind all of this.

I had THE BEST week-end. My former professor had texted me to ask if I could make it to her retirement reception (not wholesale retirement, but stepping down as the director of Eve's program). It was sooner than I had planned to head back down to Hamilton, but I did want to be there, and then I could see Eve, and Zarah (who was in the same department Eve is in now thirty years ago) would come to the reception, then we would head back to Barrie to have our traditional fall week-end.

The weather could not have been more perfect (let's just ignore that this is probably bad news for the planet, lalalalala denial). Hamilton is south of here and fall is less advanced, so the trees were in flagrant show-offy peak condition. Approaching University Hall, we ran into Eve's Social and Political Thought professor who taught me Critical Theory and a Blake seminar thirty-one years ago. One of her friends showed her this post of his:

and she got to say nonchalantly "oh yeah, that's about me", which apparently slayed. (Also, isn't that a fun, erudite, fancy way of saying 'God, I'm old'?)

The reception was a tiny bit awkward for the first little bit - hot, crowded, we didn't know anyone but each other - but then we sat down for the speeches. I don't know why I was surprised at all that people who knew Jean would be witty and hilarious and entertaining speakers, but I was very glad at how not-boring it was, especially for Eve who was at the end of a long day of classes.

I wasn't expecting to get much face time with Jean, but she was sitting in front of me for the speeches, and after she spoke and sat down and everything concluded, she spun around and said "can you get me a glass of wine?!" and asked me if her speech was okay.

Zarah and I took Eve out for dinner and for dessert we ordered a big brownie and a small brownie and ice cream on the side and it was the most perfect ratio of brownie to person ever.

The rest of the week-end I spent at Zarah's house and it was the usual blissful succession of events - in no particular order, eating, Christmas shopping, talking about books, eating, talking about people we know, walking, talking about world events, eating, watching Netflix and doing a puzzle after hitting the weed pen. We also got to sit on her front porch because global warming.

Both my drive down and my drive home were unbelievably easy and traffic-free, the kind of driving I would never expect to achieve without sacrificing a goat or something before leaving. I got up for work this morning feeling so refreshed and happy and ready to be the fun, non-cranky librarian. I got to the library and booted up the computer, and it was much faster and more responsive than usual, as if it had had a lovely, restorative weekend too.

Then I tried to sign in to the library software and it wouldn't work. I texted my partner librarian at her school and it turns out Alexandria was down at about twenty schools.

So it was a giant pain in the ass and involved writing down a lot of long barcodes by hand. And it STILL DIDN'T HARSH MY BUZZ.

Oh, I haven't added many pictures. Okay, I lost the picture of Zarah that showed how ridiculously we matched when heading out to walk downtown on Saturday, but I can cobble it together.

This was me (black vest, black and white shirt, red bracelet, red purse):

This was her (black jumpsuit, white jean jacket which she also wore Friday, red shoes)

(that last picture was seconds before a "this is your cat on drugs" moment).

Happy Monday!

Hooray for perfect brownie to ice cream ratios. It makes all the difference.

'Without having to sacrifice a goat' - bah ha. So glad your weekend went so well, plus with zero traffic. Sounds dreamy.

What a nice weekend. It must be so fun to have the opportunity to go back to your old school so often. North is actually considering Beth's and my alma mater, but they're only a junior so I'm not sure if they will still be interested when it's time to apply.

You are so stinking cute!!
I love that tweet so much. Or was that Instagram? I'm NOT in the know. But what a full-circle moment.
Your weekend sounds ridiculously perfect, right down to the brownie/ice cream ratio.
